The Machame route or call it “The Whiskey-route”, offers beautiful and panorama nature views sited as one trails up the tallest and free-standing mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro Mountain. This route is most popular to those that wish to avoid the busy route of Marangu and the steep ascents encountered on the Umbwe route. The route also provides its hikers with greater options of tented accommodations.

Machame Route (6 DAYS)
This route is also called “The Whiskey-route”.
Popularly refered to as “The Whiskey route”, the Machame route is the most beautiful and scenic route (especially at the traverse of the Western Breach) for trailing up Mountain Kilimanjaro. Compared to the Marangu route which is more busy and accommodation is in huts, the Machame route is much quieter and offers only tent accommodations making this route most preferred by slightly more adventurous hikers. Compared to the Umbwe route, the Machame route involves a gradual ascent.

This 6 day itinerary through the Machame route is however physically more challenging than the Marangu route because it involves longer, exhausting and steeper walks, with the summit night being an hour shorter.

Day One: Machame Gate (1490m) to Machame camp (2980m)
Early departure from Arusha to the Machame gate, for registration. After registration, proceed on a gentle climb through the montane forest where you will watch unique flora and ferns as you continue to the Machame campsite on 2980m for dinner and overnight. Duration of this climb is 7 hours.

Day Two: Machame camp (2980m) to Shira camp (3840m)
After your breakfast, start climbing through the Shira plateau to reach and camp near the Shira Cave at 3840m. While at this campsite, Lions can occasionally be seen, including wonderful geological features in the volcanic caldera which can be viewed during the optional half-hour nature walk taken during the afternoon. Hiking distance is 849m and climbing duration is 6-7 hours. Dinner and overnight at Shira campsite.

Day Three: Shira camp (3840m) to Lava Tower (4600m) to Barranco camp (3950m)
From Shira plateau, start climbing towards the Kibo Peak with the western glaciers clearly visible across the high altitude desert of volcanic rocks and boulders. Skirt around its base and under the imposing Western Breach and start descending to the sheltered Barranco valley and finally reaching the Barranco camp on a height of 3950m. Hiking duration is about 6 - 7 hours to the Barranco camp, over a total ascent of 110m. Having hiked much higher (to the Lava Tower at 4600m), then dropped back down (to the Barranco valley at 3950m) greatly assists in acclimatization. Dinner and overnight at Barranco campsite.

Day Four: Barranco camp (3950m) to Barafu camp (4660m)
Have breakfast at Barranco camp then statr climbing up the steep mountain ridge and the Barranco Wall. From the Barranco wall, descend to the Karanga Valley where you will have your lunch break. After Lunch, continue climbing to the Barafu campsite at a height of 4600m. Total hiking duration on this day is 7 - 8 hours over a distance of 650m. While at Barafu hut, enjoy scenery views across to Mawenzi Peak as you also have adequate rest in preparation of the challenging hike to the summit, to be done very early in the morning. Dinner and overnight at the Barafu Hut.

Day Five: Barafu camp (4660m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Mweka (3100m)
Immediately after midnight, depart for the Uhuru Peak climbing through steep frozen scree, continue past the Gillman’s Point then reach Stella Point (5475m) on the crater rim for the sunrise. Once at Uhuru Peak (5895m), you are now at the highest point on the African continent. Enjoy photo taking as you celebrate this memorable achievement. The hike to Uhuru Peak from Barafu campsite takes a duration of about 8 hours. After this short break at the “Highest Point in Africa”, start descending to Mweka campsite on 3100m. Descend duration of 7-8 hours. Dinner and overnight at Mweka camp.

Day Six: Mweka Camp (3100m) to Mweka Gate (1700m)
Have your breakfast then proceed for your final descent to the Mweka Park Gate. This descend will last 3-4 hours. At Mweka Gate, you will be met by our company representative and will transfer you to your hotel or to the airport for your next flight.

The Kilimanjaro climb is an unforgettable experience in various ways. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa, and the second highest peak in the world. Scenery and unique vegetation at different altitude levels. The sight of the huge dimensions of the massif from the summit region is utter unforgettable. Climbing Mountain Kilimanjaro, leads to exceptional physical exertion and occasional lack of sleep which make the trek memorable. The mountain brings along an unusual spirituality that you experience especially in the night - the feeling that you are being called by the dwelling of native gods. This sweet adventurous experience perfectly mixes well with the expected symptoms of altitude sickness such as mild nausea, drowsiness, dizziness.

Hiking the trail to Mountain Kilimanjaro - The Highest Peak in Africa
About Trekking the Kilimanjaro Mountains (Tanzania)

Kilimanjaro, an in-active strato volcano, is located along the border of Tanzania with Kenya and, stands at 5895 meters (19341 feet) above the sea level making it the highest peak in Africa and the second highest in the world. It comprises of majorly three volcanic cones namely; Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo. The tip of Mountain Kilimanjaro is covered by Glacier (ice), throughout the year.

There are many different trekking routes for climbing Kilimanjaro; from the southern side of Tanzania (Marangu, Machame, Umbwe routes) and from Northern side of Kenya (Rongai, Kikelewa, Nalemoru routes). Most climbers consider the Tanzanian route, through Marangu, as the most popular. The tours are usually divided into 5-day to 9-day stages, with a possible slow ascent which is advantageous for the height adjustment, and experience.

Kilimanjaro Routes:
Marangu route; very popular route with gentle gradients and long sections of up to 4700m. Beautiful forests and moorlands, comfortable but basic huts. The 6 day variant provides good time for acclimatization.

Machame Route; is the second most popular route nicknamed the Whiskey route. Has beautiful forests in which wild animals can be sported along the trek, it offers best chances for acclimatisation, and is recommended to good trekers.

Umbwe route; the shortest, steepest and toughest route of all other routes. Also has beautiful forests and spectacular ridge and is good for acclimatization.

Rongai route; this involves a long drive to the gate, remote beautiful scenery and is not a frequently used route. Wild animals might be seen along the way. Route has high altitude but fairly easy to go through, making it good for acclimatization.

Lemosho route; just like the Rongai route, this also requires a long drive to the trek starting point. It is the longest trekking remote route, not commonly in use, has beautiful forests with a number of wildlife and offers great views of the southern Ice fields. Excellent for acclimatisation.

Though the mountain can be climbed all year round, the best time of doing the mountain trekking is either between December to February (dry, warm and clearest months) or between July to September (cold but advisable). March to June and November are wet months in the rain forest hence they are not recommended for mountain climbing. The Kilimanjaro summit can be conquered in a period of 3 days (climbing) and 2 days (descending) by any reasonably fit person with the assistance of a guide and porters. The youngest person to have won this honour was an 11 years old, while the oldest to make the summit was 74. The Machame route is the most scenic route up the mountain and can be done in 6 or 7 days. The Rongai route is the easiest camping route and the Marangu route is also easy, but accommodation is in huts hence making it a very busy route.

Although the climb is technically very easy, the low temperature and altitude make the entire trek dangerous and difficult. Kilimanjaro summit is above the altitude at which HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema), or HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) occurs. All climbers will suffer considerable discomfort like shortage of breath, hypothermia and headaches, and though most young, fit people can make the Uhuru summit, a substantial number of trekkers will abandon the attempt at a lower altitude. It is therefore highly recommended that climbers ensure they are well equipped and physically capable of trekking this amazing summit.

Altitude Hazards:
During ascending, the oxygen in the air keeps decreasing hence resulting in oxygen shortage in the circulating blood, resulting in breathing difficulty. It is recommended that you acclimatise inorder to adapt to altitude by ascending slowly and maintaining the pace, breathing regularly and deeply, avoiding exertion.
Acute mountain sickness; is caused by the inability of the human body to adjust to a rapid gain in altitude. Symptoms include headache, exhaustion, nausea, reduced or loss of appetite, vomiting, swelling of the face and hands, body weakness, a rapid pulse even at rest, reduced urine output, and insomnia. When symptoms exist stop ascending and descending to a lower altitude, usage of DIAMOX drug to help reduce the severity.
Pneumonia; caused by the inflammation of the lungs. Symptoms include shivering, increase in body temperature, pain in chest, dry cough sometimes with red mucus, and rapid breath. Cure includes providing warm drinks and antibiotics to the patient, keeping patient warm, getting patient to lower altitudes, and beating the patient’s chest to encourage coughing.

Tips:
Crucial to the success of trekking the Kilimanjaro summit are; slow walking through the entire trek, and reasonable fluid taking of at least 3 liters during the trek. To prevent blisters on the feet caused by erosion, use thin wool. To prevent jeopardizing the utmost recovery sleep, it is recommended carry a warm sleeping bag. Given that the luggage shall not exceed 20kg of load, don’t compromise on the weight of equipment, but instead pay for an additional carrier - which will cost you an extra $30 only.

Uganda’s Rhinos population has steadily started increasing. Ugandan National Parks will soon get a distribution of the rising Rhino population that is currently being habituated at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary where these beautiful rare animals are reproducing while being carefully cared for and secured from the local poachers.
Rhino tracking will probably, be more popular than Gorilla tracking safaris, since tracking Rhinos is a cheaper tour. Once well distributed among the parks, it will be possible to track Rhinos in any National Park in Uganda.

Uganda Rhinos

As Rhinos prepare to return to Ugandan National Parks, and the birth of the first Uganda-born Rhino since 1982, Uganda’s Rhino tourism is set to rise to another level. These beautiful rare animals had become extinct due to the then excessive insurgencies from Uganda poaches, and the last rhino was last seen in Kidepo National Park.

As of writing this post, Rhinos cannot be found in any National Park in Uganda, but in Uganda’s only Rhino Sanctuary – Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located in Nakasongola in Western Uganda, and started in 1997 by the Rhino Fund, with the objective of bringing back Rhinos to Uganda. It is at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary that a new baby Rhino called Obama was born last month, on the evening of June 24 2009.

Obama was born to the 10-year-old female Nandi and male rhino, Hassani. Nandi and Hassani were both donated by Disney Animal Kingdom in the US in August 2006. The new baby rhino was named after Obama, the US President, because of its parents’ history. Nandi came from US and has origins in Kenya, while the father of the calf comes from Soliyo ranch in Kenya.

These animals get ready to give birth between the age of nine and 10, and their gestation period lasts about 16 months. While expecting to deliver a new baby Rhino, the female runs away with her baby from the group. The calf then has to feed off its mother for a duration of two years.

The Rhinos are habituated on an electrically fenced land, in order to ensure that the animals don’t destroy people’s food crops and gardens. As soon as the Rhinos reach a sufficient population, the management of the sanctuary intends to distribute the Rhinos amongst the various Uganda National Parks.

Besides Gorilla tourism and Cultural tours, Uganda is also turning into a popular Rhino tracking tourism destination – in Ziwa sanctuary.

Though most of the tourists to the sanctuary are interested in watching the young Obama, they usually cannot as the mother is still protective and violent, or sometimes the mother runs away with him, upon seeing visitors.

While Rhinos are believed to be fast animals, Rhino guides advice that if you happen to be chased by a Rhino, it is best to climb a tree than to continue running because Rhinos chase to kill. Like Gorillas, Rhinos can also be very deadly and violet if one offended them.

The rates for tracking Rhinos range from $40 for foreign tourists to $5 for Ugandans, including guide fees. Besides Rhino tracking, one can enjoy wildlife viewing of bush bucks, warthogs, cobs, and others.
