Marangu Route (5 OR 6 Days/4 OR 5 Nights)
This route is commonly referred to as the Coca-Cola route, and is the only route offering accommodation in huts. This tour takes 5 days or 6 days dependent on whether you choose the optional day for acclimatization to the altitude on the third day.
Day One: Marangu Gate (1980m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)
You will be met and welcomed by African Secrets Limited representative, who will then transfer you from Arusha to the Marangu gate to start your adventurous climb of one of the world’s free standing mountains. Climbing from Marangu gate to the Mandara hut on 2700m, will take a hiking time of about 5 hours.
Dinner and overnight.
Day Two: Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3720m)
In the morning after breakfast, you will depart for the climb to the Horombo hut at a height of 3720m. This climb will take approximately 6 hours of mountain climbing. Have your dinner and overnight in the Horombo hut.
Note: Mountain climbers are highly advised to take one optional day of acclimatizing, at this point.
Day Three or Four: Horombo Hut (3720m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)
Climb to the Kibo saddle, a desolate moon landscape between the two peaks, the Kibo and the Mawenzi. Hiking time is between 5 and 6 hours. Dinner and overnight in the Kibo hut on 4700m height.
Day Four or Five: Kibo hut (4700m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) then descend to Horombo hut (3720m)
The start for the climb to the top of Mountain Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, is immediately after midnight. The most steep part of the route is to Gilman’s point on 5700m. This climb takes a hiking time of 6 hours. Spend another one and a halve hours climbing through the snow to the Uhuru Peak on 5895m, the highest point of Africa. Start the Kilimanjaro descent - lasting about 6 hours, to the Horombo hut where you will have dinner and stay overnight.
Day Five or Six: Horombo hut (3720m) to Marangu Gate (1980m)
Early in the morning, you will continue your descent from Horombo hut to the Marangu gate. The hiking time for this descend is 6 hours. From the gate, you will be transferred back to your hotel or airport for your next flight.
