Climbing Kilimanjaro (Umbwe)
Umbwe Route (5 OR 6 DAYS) Kilimanjaro Climb
The Umbwe route is one of the shortest and direct routes while climbing to the Uhuru Peak, the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and also the highest point of Africa. This route is popular for offering multiple caves including the famous Umbwe cave camp.
Day One: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Caves (2850m)
You will be met at your hotel by African Secrets Limited’s representative, and be driven from Arusha to the Umbwe gate, where you will register before you can start hiking. This hike will take you through dense rainforests along steep slopes, with a walk on the narrow ridge between the Umbwe River and the Lonzo River, reaching the Umbwe Forest Caves Campsite for dinner and overnight. Hiking duration is 5-6 hours over a distance of about 13kms.
Day Two: Umbwe Caves (2850m) to Barranco Hut (3950m)
Have your morning breakfast, then leave the Umbwe Caves campsite and start climbing up through the moorland and along the narrow scenery ridge before reaching the Barranco camp. The hiking duration to the Barranco camp is about 4 hours, over a distance of 5kms.
Note: We advise our clients to have an optional extra day for acclimatization, at this point.
Day Three or Four: Barranco Hut (3950m) to Barafu Hut
Have your breakfast at Barranco hut then start a short hard hike over a vertical wall to the top of the Great Barranco, descend through ridges to Karanga valley from where you can have a brief rest break then proceed hiking to the Barafu glacier hut (5100m). Dinner and overnight at Barafu hut.
Hiking duration is 8 to 9hours.
Day Four or Five: Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Mweka Hut
Immediately after midnight, start climbing to the Uhuru Peak at 5895m (the highest point of Africa). This climb takes you through the Kibo crater rim at Stella Point (which is normally bitterly cold), ascending between glaciers covered with snow (ice axe or ski stick becomes greatly handy, at this point). Having climbed through a distance of 3kms, for a duration of 6 to 7 hours. Enjoy this enormous memorable achievement of having reached the highest point in Africa. Descend to the Barafu hut for Lunch, then continue descending to Mweka camp for your dinner and overnight.
Day Five or Six: Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate
After breakfast at Mweka hut, start the final descent to the Mweka gate, which is a distance of 10kms and descent duration of 5 hours.
Once at Mweka gate, you will be met and transfered, by our company representative, to your hotel or the airport.
