Naggalabi Culture Tour
Naggalabi Coronation Site Buddo:
The nation was born out of the unification of ancient kingdoms, as well as many smaller independent chieftains now part of the richness of the modern state. This heritage lives on in the hearts of the people, their traditional dress, languages, dances and customs. Today, all Ugandans live together, proud to be one people, but cherish the memory of their history and keep alive the traditions of their ancestors.
Naggalabi Coronation Site Buddo is where the Kabakas of Buganda have been crowned for the past 700 years. It is said that Buganda accession ceremonies take place on Buddo Hill because it is believed that Buddo hill is where Kintu the first kabaka of Buganda killed his brother Bemba and declared himself King in the 13th century. It is the most important single site in Ganda culture and lies in the heart of the Buganda Kingdom. The coronation of Ssabasajja Kabaka Ronald Kimera Mutebi II, which was attended by tens of thousands of people, took place at Naggalabi on 31st July 1993.
Location:
This pleasant site with a panoramic view of the surrounding country side is a 20 minutes drive from Kampala along Masaka road after Kyengera trading centre.
How to Get There:
Nagalabi coronation site is located at Nagalabi, Busiro County along the Kampala-Masaka Road. When coming from Kampala, drive 11 Kilometers along the Kampala-Masaka Road through Kyengera trading center. Turn left at Nakasozi onto a tarmac road that goes to the site.
Attractions:
There are various attractions on the place that include the following:
Nakibuka:
This is an anthill where Kintu stood and announced after Bemba had been killed. The same ant is important today because it is where the Kabaka sits during coronation. During the coronation the anthill is covered with the backcloth, lion and leopard skins.
Bwanika house:
After the coronation of the new king at Nakibuka, he is shoulder lifted and taken to this house by the Buffalo clan to receive the powers and blessing of the forefathers.
Mboneledde (I have learnt):
This is the tree that was acting as the kabaka’s court. It was named so because after forgiving the wrong doers, they would say that they are forgiven.
Buganda house:
This is the iron roofed hut where Bemba and Kintu were born. After the coronation of the new king first sleeps in this house for a few days.
